Manufacturers should put health ahead of marketing ploys says Glenis Willmott. The East Midlands Euro MP managed to win round the backing of the European Parliament and defeat new claims manufacturers had wanted to put on their packaging. Going round the supermarket plenty of products say "reduced fat" or "low salt". In fact, under EU rules, they can only put that if it contains 30% less than their rivals on a like-for-like basis. Voting in Brussels, MEPs said no to manufacturers who wanted to go further and be allowed to put claims like "15% less fat". Glenis Willmott explains why she thinks that would have been misleading for shoppers.
